AMARO SAN SIMONE
More than an Amaro, a (pleasant) institution
In Piedmont San Simone is Amaro. It is an icon, a rite: identity and complicity.
The Fulcheri family, Ruggero and Federico, Aldo Fechino's nephew, keep alive tradition, working in the same foundation factory where the last batches of the ancient Purativo San Simone dating back to the 16th century were produced century.
Born from the ancient Depurativo San Simone
In Turin, the Dora Grossa district, today Via Garibaldi, has hosted since numerous brotherhoods since the Middle Ages. Among these in the mid-sixteenth century was that of the monks of San Simone. Wise religious men dedicated to astronomy and natural sciences.
From their knowledge was born an elixir of medicinal herbs, the Depurativo San Simone, appreciated for its medicinal virtues and produced by Antica Officina Farmaceutica San Simone until the fifties of the last century, when Dr. Fechino, who became the owner of the business, decided to make a purifying a liqueur that was not just a cure but rather a delight for those who drank it.
The ancient formula was complex and updating it was an arduous task that took years. But the result was convincing. The formulation of Amaro is secret (obviously!), but gentian, cinchona, absinthe, rhubarb root and marjoram are among the 39 Piedmontese plants, herbs and roots at the origin of its character complex and generous in which the balance between bitter and sweet is ideal.
The doctor's Amaro, no longer pharmacist but entrepreneur, he had immediate success. The processing is entirely artisanal, with some of the stills, presses and macerators already used more than sixty years ago.
